Vieste
Uieste lies on a
small rocky peninsula, between S. Lorenzo and
the castle beach the marine grottoes.
The harbour is important for trade wjith the shores on
the other side of the Adriatic.
The centre of the
uillage is most picturesque ujith its narrow
alleys, arches, and white-washed houses.
View of Vieste
Old Vieste
stands on a sharp peninsula with the church of San
Francesco at the extremity and the medieval
quarter.
There is also an interesting cathedral in Romanic -
Apulian Style which seems to haue been built on
the site of an ancient pagan temple.
The beach at
Uieste is ouerlooked by the Pizzomunno, a
huge, natural monolith.
Vieste
is like a prow on the Adriatic. The long
Castello beach and the curious monolith
called "Pizzomunno " at the foot of a large
calcareous rock.
Vieste : Baia di San Felice. A sandy
beach seen between trees , towers and
rocks - Gargano coast between
Vieste and Mattinata. You feel you
are in some fabled kingdom. On the coast,
where there is less greenery, there are the endemic
woods of Aleppo pines which, with their pungent, salty
scent and green contrast to the glaring white of the
coast, create an almost unreal, "unworldly" atmosphere.
Their "court" is the Mediterranean maquis, with its
mastic trees, arbutus, and firillea which lend colour
and scent to the sandy coastal areas.
